Terence G. Eakens was a great asset to this community. He cared deeply for his friends and was always more than helpful to the ReViva Collective in Alpine. He recently was seen around town on his two bicycles, which he loved. He will be missed.
Here is his obit. in the Avalanche:
Terence Gregory Eakens died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Friday, May 8, 2009.
Terence was born Dec. 7, 1949. He was lucky enough to fall in love with and marry Cheryl Cormier in 1973, becoming part of a family who loved him. For 35 years, they went through good and bad times as their love grew. He had lived in Alpine since 1980.
Terence loved chess, studied it and played it as often as he could. At the U.S. Open in 2008, he was awarded a certificate for having participated in five U.S. Opens. He had already registered for the U.S. Open to be held in Indianapolis this coming August.
“He will be missed by all of his chess buddies. He will also be missed by everyone who enjoyed seeing him ride by on his great-looking blue motorized recumbent bicycle,” his wife said. “He was an engaging conversationalist who would stop and talk to anyone who showed an interest. Satisfying his curiosity made him a fount of knowledge on a wide variety of subjects.
“Life will be less rich for his absence.”
